After a decade or so of channeling my artistic energy into interior and landscape improvements on three consecutive older homes, I launched madebymartha in 2005. It was either that—direct my "this would look beautiful if..." obsession toward other people’s spaces—or keep moving to a new old house every few years. And really, while I’m crazy about design, decorating, and landscaping, I’m not so keen on packing and unpacking! My ability to visualize how great something could look, whether it’s a piece of old furniture, a room, a yard, or an old house, has always been second nature to me, so it’s been something of a revelation to learn that not everyone can do it and that my talent might be valued by others.
Some of the most direct expressions of my artistic abilities are the decorative items I make from architectural salvage, faux painting, helping clients with color selection, and creating visually pleasing (and functional) arrangements of new and existing furnishings, accessories, etc. I’m also pretty handy with my growing collection of power tools for woodworking, though I don’t think Norm Abrams needs to worry about competition from me! And, as much as I wish my mother were still alive to see madebymartha and cheer me on, it seems she left me (and my sisters) her knack for creating beautiful gardens.
I’ve just listed some of the things I’m good at, but artistic vision and "hands on" skills are not enough. If you’re contemplating letting me into your home and changing your living space, you want to know you're going to love your new space and that it reflects you. And since you’ll be interacting with me over a potentially extended period of time, it’s important that I’m not the only one having fun! I want you to be comfortable working with me, and ideally, enjoy the experience. So please know that while I’ll have ideas about how I’d like your space to look, I get more satisfaction when my work makes you happy, and the job isn’t done until you are.
Please have a look around the site, check out photos of some madebymartha projects, and see what some of my clients have said about their experiences with me. I hope to hear from you!
